Chinese Wedding Traditions: Women Then & Now
China have been known to have a rich history which dates back to more than 5,000 years. In fact, China is amongst the oldest nations in the world. In ancient periods, weddings in China were typically arranged when a girl was in her teenage.
At times, as early as 11 to 12 years old primarily because her parents weren’t able to pay to feed & clothe their daughter. A number of times, the girls were sold to the parents of her soon-to-be husband. As a result, the real parents of the girl didn’t have any rights to interfere in the life of their daughter.
Chinese Wedding Traditions: political reasons
Also, there were some political reasons to this as well. The girl was seen as a servant rather than a wife & not given the respect she deserves. Even after the girl was grown & had kids, still she was supposed to serve the family of her husband.
The tradition begun to see a change during 1919. Although some did embrace the new thinking, there were a few who didn’t welcome it at all. This lead to a division amongst individuals during those period.
During the year 1949, freedom to pick a companion of their choice became law in law & woman were given equal rights just like men. Later, as the communists came into the power though, Mao Zedong separated the Chinese people into various classes of political significance. In consequence, true love for a successful marriage was put sideways yet again for political classes.
If a woman wanted to get decent jobs, be loved by their friends & family members, they were required to continue with the custom & marry a man inside a favored class. The tradition continued till the demise of Mao Zedong during the mid-70’s.
